The city of Leicester has a population of nearly 300,000 and is a cosmopolitan
city with its many cultures reflected in its restaurants, clubs, shops
and festivals. The 700 year old market is one of the largest covered markets
in Europe (and is where Gary Lineker used to work on his mum and dad's stall).
The city centre and other areas provide a wide choice of shops. Students
make up over 10% of the population in term time, giving the city a vibrant
and youthful feel. This is reflected in a wide choice of social and leisure
facilities including many continental
style café bars, lively clubs and pubs.
There
is a wealth of restaurants and takeaways serving the world's cuisine such as Italian, Mexican, Chinese,
Creole, French and Arabic. Leicester also boasts some of the finest curry
houses in the country (if you need any recommendations just ask one of
the Leicester RSPP group! ) with some of the best to be found on Leicester's
famous "Golden Mile" (Belgrave Road). See the links below for more information.
The
University's reputation for physics and space science helped Leicester
gain the National Space Science Centre. The centre is located 2 miles
to the north of the Leicester and can be reached by bus from the city centre.
National
Space Centre. For those seeking something a little more tranquil,
the University's Botanic
Gardens are only a short walk from the conference venue.
