Practical Arrangements for the Conference

Here is some useful information regarding practical arrangements for the conference

Accommodation

The accommodation provided by the University will be located in the Gilbert Murray Hall of Residence.  All rooms are single en-suite.  Delegates requiring double or other types of accommodation should seek alternative sources, such as the hotels listed below.  Rooms are supplied with a welcome toiletry pack, towels and an NTL card-operated telephone.  Bedrooms will be available from 12:00 on Sunday 7th August and should be vacated by 09:30 on the day of departure.  Please note that all rooms are non-smoking. Small toiletry items can be purchased  from the Hall Manager whilst newspapers are normally available on sale after breakfast in the dining room.  Alternatively, Oadby (20 min walk) offers branches of most banks, a post office, shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants.

The Hall bar will be open in the evenings and on the Monday night there will be a Pimms ice-breaker on the lawns of the University's Edwardian house The Knoll in the botanic gardens.

We strongly recommend that delegates use the Gilbert Murray accommodation, as this is thirty seconds' walk from the conference hall. However, for those wishing to use alternative accommodation, there follows a list of nearby and centrally located hotels. These are marked on a map of Leicester here. Please note that this list is provided for your convenience and is not intended to indicate approval of their services by the University of Leicester. Please also be aware that transport to and from alternative accommodation will NOT be provided, such that you will probably need to hire a car, and although the distances from hotels to the Hall may look short on the map, travel in the Leicester rush-hour is not recommended!

Dining

Please indicate on the registration form if you have any special dietary requirements.  The dining hall is located in Stamford Hall, which is two minutes' stroll through the gardens from Gilbert Murray Hall.

Conference Dinner

On Thursday afternoon we will take a trip to  Warwick Castle, whereupon we will have a guided tour followed by the Kingmaker's Feast in the evening.   If you would like to take guests to the dinner please indicate this in the appropriate section of the registration form and we will contact you.  Please note that, unfortunately, numbers are limited for the Kingmaker's Feast, so we will be allocating places on a first come first served basis.  In the event of over-subscription alternative arrangements will be made along with any appropriate reimbursement.

"...We gazed for half an hour at the stupendous magnificence of the castle; which is probably the most perfect piece of castellated antiquity in the kingdom." - Lord Torrington on visiting Warwick Castle, July 7th 1785.

Oral Presentations

The meeting room will be equipped with 2 standard overhead projectors, 1 multimedia (PC) projector and a flipchart easel.

Poster Presentations

Individuals requesting or assigned poster presentations will be notified of the poster board dimensions when the scientific programme is finalised.  Fixing materials will be provided.

And finally...

We know that, for some people, coming to England can mean relearning the English language. So here is a pronunciation guide for some of the more tricky place names that even other English people sometimes get wrong. And don't be alarmed if you get called "me duck"; the standard Leicestrian greeting in the market is "hey up, me duck"...

Name with correct spelling Name with phonetic spelling
Leicester Lester (or Lestor if you're actually from Leicester)
Warwick Worrick
Loughborough Luffbrer
Belvoir Beaver (really!)
Stoughton Stoatun
Derby Darby
